Analysis Shows LP makes a difference

Here are the numbers from the 2013 Virginia Governor’s Election. What can we conclude from them?


* The dollars spent by Libertarian Candidate Sarvis must be qualified. The Huffington post reported that the Sarvis Campaign and Libertarian Party spent $93,000, but a single donor did spend $300,000 promoting Sarvis on his own.

The data shows a clear microcosm of the two major parties and the largest third party - the LP. It unambiguously demonstrates the priorities, methodology and effectiveness of each party on many levels. Unfortunately it also demonstrates that one single person smart enough to understand the effectiveness of each party’s financial skills can turn an election.

What we know and learn about Democrats

They believe:
* Cost is irrelevant
* Effective use of other people’s money is not important.
History has shown that they govern the same way they run elections.

What we know and learn about Republicans

They believe:
* Cost is marginally relevant
* The use of other people’s money will be noted but not closely.
History has shown they spend less than the Democrats to get similar results.
History has shown they govern the same way they run elections.

What we know and learn about Libertarians

They believe:
* Cost is extremely important
* Effective use of other people’s money is critical
History has shown they spend way less to get effective results.
History has shown they don’t have enough donors to win major elections.
History has shown they govern the same way they run elections.

What the Results Mean and Imply

Knowing the above to be true from viewing other elections, one person single handedly changed the results of the Virginia Governer’s Race. Knowing some basic facts including: the race and state are very evenly divided between the two major parties; the nominal dollars the LP has and historically spend only accounts for 1% of the vote; Libertarians consistently get more votes per dollar spent than either the Democrats or Republicans; and finally by a large margin Republicans lean more libertarian than Democrats.

A liberal Democrat with $300K to invest in the election did careful analysis and threw his money where it would be most effective - The Libertarian Party. In a virtual dead heat between McAuliffe and Cuccinelli his $300K if given to the Democrats to spend on McAuliffe would have been worth a half of a percent of the votes and would probably not made a difference. However, that same money would get 5% of the vote is spent on the Libertarian party. Knowing the LP pulls far more from the Republicans than the Democrats he rightly concluded the most effective use of his dollars would be supporting the LP. In fact neither the Democrats nor Republicans uses money as effectively as the LP - PERIOD!

What we know is that if just 9 rich republicans had joined the lone Democrat and put up $300K each, the election would have gone to the Saris. You won’t hear that from the MSM, that’s a scary thought. Just 10 rich guys, donating less than a third of a million dollars each, and the LP wins in Virginia.

Yes, the analysis is clear and the LP got used by a Democrat to sway a major election. The ruling elites in both parties won’t talk about or look at the effectiveness of the LP. Once the people learn how effective a little money can be in defeating the two factions of the statist ruling elite in Washington they know things will change.

You and a few fellow businessmen can make a difference and actually reduce the size of government.

MAP-21 Scary Law

This is one scary law.S. 1813: MAP-21

This law is full of over reaching nanny state requirements, and protection for government, but big-brother tracking of you and your car.

New MPO's cannot be challenged in court, they do have to allow local comments, but no requirement to act on them. Other legal crap like "this section, shall not be subject to discovery or admitted into evidence in a Federal or State court proceeding" make it sound like they want a Metropolitan Planning Orginization(MPO) is not legally accountable for it's actions. They aren't even accountable for doing what the law says they must. "The failure to take into consideration 1 or more of the factors specified in paragraphs (1) and (2) shall not be subject to review by any court under this title, chapter 53 of title 49, subchapter II of chapter 5 of title 5, or chapter 7 of title 5 in any matter affecting a metropolitan transportation plan, a transportation improvement program, a project or strategy, or the certification of a planning process."

It's just Bad Law!

Scary part is that they are now going to require every car to have a black box SEC. 31406. Mandatory Event Data Recorders-

(1) IN GENERAL- Not later than 180 days after the date of enactment of this Act, the Secretary shall revise part 563 of title 49, Code of Federal Regulations, to require, beginning with model year 2015, that new passenger motor vehicles sold in the United States be equipped with an event data recorder that meets the requirements under that part.

You may own the data, but the government can get the data if it wants. I think restoring that 1973 VW Bug is more important than ever.

We have too much government, and even a cursory glance at MAP-21 is scary.

I believe in the right to privacy.

Yet I can think of someone who deserves very little privacy – a policeman making an arrest. Unfortunately, in some states it's a crime to make a video of a policeman doing just that. People recording police have been threatened, detained or arrested. Some were jailed overnight.

That's wrong. Police work for the public, they're paid with tax money, and most importantly, they have tremendous power. They've got the legal right to pull guns, detain us, lock us up and, in some cases, shoot us. The potential for abuse is great. So it's a good thing that modern video cameras are now so commonplace. Any abuse of police power in a public place is likely to be recorded. Why should that be a crime in some states?

I asked Radley Balko, an editor at Reason magazine who keeps an eye on issues like this: What's happened to the people who were arrested for videotaping cops at work? Balko will be a guest on my Fox Business show this week.

"In most of these cases, the people aren't actually prosecuted," Balko said. "The charges tend to get dropped before these cases get to trial – I think because the people prosecuting these cases and the people who make the laws don't want the laws to actually get challenged. But it's a night in jail."

On what charge?

"In states that have these two-party consent laws, they rely on the old wiretapping laws. The claim is that police officers have a right to privacy while they're on the job in public exercising some pretty powerful responsibilities that we give them. I think that claim is ridiculous."

He says some authorities now claim that people who record the police while being arrested are "interfering with arrest or ... refusing to obey a lawful order, if they tell you to turn the camera off and you don't."

How does it interfere with the arrest?

"It's a ridiculous argument. But here's the thing: You may not go to jail for these charges. But they're going to take your camera, going to arrest you, you're going to be handcuffed, put in the back of a squad car. And nothing is going to happen to the police officers who illegally arrest you – usually."

Occasionally a cop caught abusing his power is arrested or fired. But that's rare.

In Maryland, motorcyclist Tony Graber got in trouble for recording a cop who pulled him over for speeding. Graber didn't know it was a cop. He was just a guy in plainclothes with a gun. The cop eventually identified himself.

"Graber didn't get arrested until he posted that video on YouTube," Balko explained. "Once he posted it ... the state police raided his home – came into his home early in the morning, guns drawn – confiscated a bunch of computer equipment, held him and his parents at gunpoint, arrested him. He spent several nights in jail. He had felony charges hanging over his head until the case finally got to court."

Fortunately, a state judge threw out the charges and wrote a strong opinion:

"Those of us who are public officials and are entrusted with the power of the state should not expect our actions to be shielded from public observation."

He ended by asking, "Who watches the watchmen?" – a question Plato raised in "The Republic." Good for the judge. But Balko points out that no one punished the authorities who abused their power.

"The prosecutor who charged him, the cops who raided him and arrested him – they were all wrong about the law and did real harm to him, and none of them are going to suffer any consequences."

Most police officers told us that they're fine with cameras, and some were happy they were recorded when they were vindicated of misconduct charges thanks to a video made by a bystander. The cops who object tend to be problem cops.

That little phone with a camera is a good thing. Now it's even a weapon against tyranny.

But, Balko added, only if the laws "ensure that we can continue to use it that way."

Problem Solving 101

I taught high school chemistry for a few years, virtually every high school science book has a section, sometimes a whole chapter on problem solving and the scientific method. Having come from the industrial world, not the teaching world, and realizing that very little of the Chemistry I thought would be remembered past graduation, I stressed one thing over and over, problem solving and critical thinking. I believe that these skills would be far more valuable for my students than remembering the atomic weight of carbon. If you google “4 steps to problem solving,” you will find a veritable tsunami of information. The basic 4 steps are Analyze, Plan, Execute, and Evaluate. These four steps may have different terms to describe them but in essence they are the basis of logical rational problem solving. Kids ask a lot of hard questions, often not about the subject you are teaching. As a teacher I often responded with “You are smart enough to figure that one out. Use your problem solving skills and think for yourself, what was tried before, what worked, what didn’t.”

The first step to solving any is always analyzing the problem. This involves correctly defining the problem. This should include what you know in as much detail as possible, historical information of similar or identical problems, previous solutions that worked and those that didn’t work, and what the expected or desired results to any actions you will plan for solving the problem. Most problems that keep getting worse not better are caused by two things; 1) incorrectly identifying the problem, and 2) failure to correctly evaluate the results of the plan executed to solve the problem.

Consider our economy and unemployment. We were told that the Obama’s plan to solve this problem was to raise the statutory national debt limit from $12.4 trillion to $14.3 trillion and for the government to spend the borrowed money, that the execution of this plan would keep unemployment at or below 8%, and would stimulate a recovery. Thirteen months ago this plan was put into place. No rational or reasonable evaluation of the execution of that plan can recognize any benefit, the only results seems to be more debt for every man, woman, and child in the nation, less jobs, and inflation. There is no evidence that the increase in the statutory national debt limit was of any benefit.

Obama’s plan is not in error, nor is his execution of that plan. Like most solutions that fail the problem was not correctly identified and the evaluations of past solutions to similar or identical problems were not considered. We have an out-of-control federal budget. This is a symptom not the problem. We have a cultural problem, which has manifested itself in a selfish desire to have what we want, when we want, even if we can’t afford it, and if we can’t afford it we want our guardian to pay for it. In an adolescent we call this a lack of maturity. If your friend consistently asks to borrow money, is always broke, but spends his money on beer and the horse track, you don’t assume he has a budget problem, but a problem of priorities and character. Would you continue to lend him money? When he tells you he has a sure thing on a horse named Clementine and wants you to give him more money what do you tell him? Do you tell him to quit spending on the beer and lend him more for the ponies? What would your other friends say if you continued to give him money?

In reality, unlike what some in the news and major political parties would tell us, raising our statutory national debt limit will not cause us to default on the national debt. To make this understandable, consider what you think would work if you had too much credit card debt. If you have a credit card and are barely able to make the monthly interest payments on it, will raising your credit limit and charging more purchases to the card make it more likely or less likely that you will eventually be forced to default on your credit-card debt? No reasoned analysis of the execution of past plans which increased our national debt and spending can conclude that those plans are effective in solving our economic problems.

We must pressure all of our leaders in Washington and hold them accountable. 70% of all Americans agree, we should not increase the federal debt. Reasoned evaluations of past plans implemented clearly demonstrate that the Democrats in Washington will not reduce federal spending as they have promised. The only bargaining chip the GOP has is to not compromise and not vote to expand the federal government. The Republicans have the ability to stop increased federal spending, just vote no on raising the statutory national debt limit. Reasoned evaluations of past actions clearly demonstrate that the Republicans in Washington will capitulate to the Democrats. We as citizens must pressure them to change their past actions, as they have repeatedly proven not to work.

Any high school student who received decent grades in their science classes, could analyze the problem, look at the history, and evaluate the execution of past plans, and conclude that doing the same thing that failed in the past will not result in any different outcome. Logic, reasoning, and problem solving skills are not strong points of liberals in Washington. Liberals rely on emotion and feelings not reality; the reality is we cannot afford to permit an increase in the statutory national debt limit while at the same time spending more on multiple military occupations, being worldwide policeman, aid to foreign governments, bailing out bankrupt financial institutions and massive income transfers from wage earners and entrepreneurs to the elderly, poor and other unproductive classes.

The problem is not the budget; the problem is our elected officials will say and do anything to keep their power; the economic health of the nation is not a problem they will address if it does not increase their power or chances of re-election. Protecting the liberty and interests of the people is not a goal of the Democrats or Republicans, thus their plans and how they are executed are designed to make the politician more electable and garner more power, not to solve America’s problems. Taken in this context, their plans have been successful, the proof is that they, the politicians, continue to gain power and get re-elected, while depriving we the people of liberty and putting us further into debt.

We the people are applying basic problem solving skills to the economy. We have analyzed the problem, and created some plans which we started to execute last November, when we kicked out a lot of incumbents of both parties. We have clearly indicated that part of our plan to get out of the financial trouble we are in is to first stop spending borrowed money; indicated by 70% of us who don’t want the debt ceiling raised. If we expect the government to do our bidding so we must keep up the pressure and let Washington know that, we will not accept the execution of same failed policies, like borrowing and spending to solve a debt problem. Let everybody in congress and the senate know that your plan is to vote out anyone who votes to raise the statutory national debt limit.

The Elephant in the Room

Oops! We’re far worse than we thought; official numbers released yesterday show that last year’s budget deficit will be larger than previously projected, not $1.4Trillion but $1.65Trillion. The truth is we are actually worse off, because that $1.4Trillion does not include the unfunded off-budget items like bailouts, Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac, student loans, and other stuff the press and government aren’t telling us. The actual debt of the US is around $20.7 trillion. Do some simple math and you see that for each and every one of the 310 Million people in the US there is a $69,000 bill that must be paid. Ouch! It’s worse than that as only about $100 million of us are wage earners paying income and social security taxes, the rest are unemployed, children, or senior citizens. That means that every person earning a wage has to repay just over $2,000,000.

By law the US cannot go much if any further into debt without a new law extending the US Debt Ceiling. The latest poll from Investor’s Business Daily shows 70 percent of Americans opposed to raising the debt limit. “Even a majority of Democrats — 55% — say raising the limit is a bad idea. Some 86% of Republicans and 74% of independents agree.”



Now about that elephant in the room, it’s not the stupidity of borrowing more money when the amount owed by every man woman and child in the country far exceeds the ability of wage earners to repay. It’s not that congress is acting against the will of over 2/3rds of the populations. It’s that Republicans hold all the cards. I wish it was us libertarians but it’s not it’s the GOP. They can stop all new deficit spending without any help of the Democrats right now. In fact all the power is in the control of the Republicans in the house.

Although Rand Paul is talking some serious cuts in the budget, most of the reality about “cuts” is not actually about “cuts” but about a slowing of the expansion in spending. Just look at Obama’s proposed budget. In truth because of the big majority the Republicans have in the house all they have to do is vote NO on extending debt ceiling and the government will be forced to cut spending. You are going to hear lots of scare tactics from the Democrats and Republican leadership, as to why we must allow the government to go deeper into debt. The fact is they don’t have to, they don’t have to expand the government is already too big. The GOP is in total control to stop the expansion of government, and can force the democrats to work with them on what must be really cut, not just rubber stamp expansion.

That’s the elephant in the room that the press, the GOP, and especially the Democrats won’t talk about. Republicans have the power to actually stop the expansion and possibly reduce the size of government NOW, not next year, next decade, but NOW. The question is will they? Since I don’t believe that there is any true difference between either the Democrats or Republicans, I can safely predict that the GOP will go along to get along and vote to expand government and put you and I further into debt.

Want to make me eat crow and prove me wrong? That's Easy. Contact every Republican congressman and let them know that you don’t want any further expansion of government, that you don’t want any more debt, that you want them to vote NO on raising the debt ceiling. If enough people do this and the will of the people is made clear to Washington, we can stop this mad raging elephant what continues to spend beyond our means.

Libertarian Party of Florida Supports Ban on Red Light Cameras

Winter Park, FL, December 15, 2010 - Through its Executive Committee, the Libertarian Party of Florida has voted to support future legislation to ban the use of red light cameras within the State of Florida.

The cameras have been popping up in various communities throughout the state as local government coffers dry up. Recent support for the cameras by local governments seems to correlate to the reduction of regular tax revenues.

The Libertarian Party of Florida has successfully lobbied the state legislature in past years to keep the state from approving their use and now seeks an all-out ban of the devices which create more problems then they solve.

Some people are under the misguided idea the cameras will reduce accidents at intersections however the data shows a completely different picture. In only a handful of anecdotal of situations have the cameras helped while the overwhelming evidence clearly shows installation of the cameras make intersection less safe by creating more accidents, thereby using more rescue and police services.

In 2010 the Florida legislature passed and Governor Crist signed HB 325 "Uniform Traffic Control" into law which will benefit Goldman Sachs financially and put more Floridians in the hospital. There is a reason AAA, the Libertarian Party of Florida, the National Motorists Association and many individuals vigorously attempted to block this poorly drafted legislation, however it was passed nonetheless.

The Goldman Sachs connection is in relation to the 30%+ stake it has American Traffic Solutions. ATS and Redflex Systems will get most of the Florida contracts.

The Libertarian Party of Florida does not condone running red lights and it is clear the installation of these cameras greatly increase the chances more Floridians will be sent to the hospital with debilitating injuries. Many studies on this phenomenon have been conducted over decades and the tend to come to the same conclusion - a dramatic increase in accidents where the cameras have been installed, increasing the yellow light change by one second dramatically reduces accidents, having a one second time sequence from red to green cross traffic dramatically decreases accidents and governments (in an attempt to raise revenue) have been found guilty of reducing the yellow signal time.

Red light cameras have been banned in Connecticut, Nevada, New Hampshire, West Virginia, Wisconsin, Mississippi and Minnesota. Some have been banned due to the safety issue, others due to a state supreme court finding them illegal and unconstitutional.

Minneapolis, Minnesota is actually suing Redflex Traffic Systems for $3 million due to the refunds it has made to Minnesotans after their Supreme Court ruled the cameras illegal.

The Washington Post reports that in Washington, DC, after sifting through its data and finding the cameras increased accidents, it continued the program anyway due to the revenue it brought in.

The Virginia Department of Transportation conducted a study and subsequently followed it up two years later to confirm the cameras increased accidents at intersections with the cameras.

The Libertarian Party of Florida encourages its membership and all Floridians to openly oppose red light cameras, and to fight citations they may receive through the court system. The LPF will also continue in its efforts to officially ban the use of red light cameras in the State of Florida.

545 vs 300,000,000

Politicians are the only people in the world who create problems and then campaign against them.

Have you ever wondered, if both the Democrats and the Republicans are against deficits, WHY do we have deficits?

Have you ever wondered, if all the politicians are against inflation and high taxes, WHY do we have inflation and high taxes?

You and I don't propose a federal budget. The president does..

You and I don't have the Constitutional authority to vote on appropriations. The House of Representatives does.

You and I don't write the tax code, Congress does.

You and I don't set fiscal policy, Congress does.

You and I don't control monetary policy, the Federal Reserve Bank does.

One hundred senators, 435 congressmen, one president, and nine Supreme Court justices equates to 545 human beings out of the 300 million are directly, legally, morally, and individually responsible for the domestic problems that plague this country.

I excluded the members of the Federal Reserve Board because that problem was created by the Congress. In 1913, Congress delegated its Constitutional duty to provide a sound currency to a federally chartered, but private, central bank.

I excluded all the special interests and lobbyists for a sound reason.. They have no legal authority. They have no ability to coerce a senator, a congressman, or a president to do one cotton-picking thing. I don't care if they offer a politician $1 million dollars in cash. The politician has the power to accept or reject it. No matter what the lobbyist promises, it is the legislator's responsibility to determine how he votes.

Those 545 human beings spend much of their energy convincing you that what they did is not their fault. They cooperate in this common con regardless of party.
What separates a politician from a normal human being is an excessive amount of gall. No normal human being would have the gall of a Speaker, who stood up and criticized the President for creating deficits.. The president can only propose a budget. He cannot force the Congress to accept it.

The Constitution, which is the supreme law of the land, gives sole responsibility to the House of Representatives for originating and approving appropriations and taxes. Who is the speaker of the House? Nancy Pelosi. She is the leader of the majority party. She and fellow House members, not the president, can approve any budget they want. If the president vetoes it, they can pass it over his veto if they agree to.

It seems inconceivable to me that a nation of 300 million can not replace 545 people who stand convicted -- by present facts -- of incompetence and irresponsibility. I can't think of a single domestic problem that is not traceable directly to those 545 people. When you fully grasp the plain truth that 545 people exercise the power of the federal government, then it must follow that what exists is what they want to exist.

If the tax code is unfair, it's because they want it unfair.

If the budget is in the red, it's because they want it in the red ..

If the Army & Marines are in IRAQ , it's because they want them in IRAQ

If they do not receive social security but are on an elite retirement plan not available to the people, it's because they want it that way.

There are no insoluble government problems.

Do not let these 545 people shift the blame to bureaucrats, whom they hire and whose jobs they can abolish; to lobbyists, whose gifts and advice they can reject; to regulators, to whom they give the power to regulate and from whom they can take this power. Above all, do not let them con you into the belief that there exists disembodied mystical forces like "the economy," "inflation," or "politics" that prevent them from doing what they take an oath to do.

Those 545 people, and they alone, are responsible.

They, and they alone, have the power.

They, and they alone, should be held accountable by the people who are their bosses.

Provided the voters have the gumption to manage their own employees.

We should vote all of them out of office and clean up their mess!

The Libertarian Party Prosperity Plan

1) Repeal the income tax: Adopt legislation repealing the income tax and abolishing the Internal Revenue Service. Until the income tax is repealed, adopt legislation preserving the 2001 and 2003 tax cuts and enacting across-the-board income tax cuts.

2) Adopt the Balanced Budget Amendment: Adopt a constitutional amendment requiring the federal budget be balanced, and balanced exclusively by cutting expenditures, not by raising taxes.

3) Abolish corporate welfare and bailouts: Adopt federal legislation prohibiting any federal spending program that provides payments or unique benefits and advantages to specific companies or industries, terminating programs that provide direct grants to businesses, eliminating programs that provide research and other services for industries and ending programs that provide subsidized loans or insurance to businesses.
